Data security, access, retention and backups

The DLBT is hosted on a virtual server maintained by the Vienna University Computer Centre (ZID) and is protected by a firewall.

The ZID is responsible for maintaining the virtual infrastructure and supporting the secure operation of the DLBT server. The DLBT uses the Laravel framework and YARM packages as its technical infrastructure. The Laravel instance and YARM packages are updated regularly, with updates normally performed on a monthly basis.

Access to research materials

Copyright-protected source materials held within the DLBT and iConTxt research infrastructure are managed separately from information made publicly available through the DLBT. Inclusion of a document in the research corpus does not in itself result in that document being made publicly accessible.

Access to protected research materials is restricted to authorised persons where access is required for the relevant scientific research purpose. Depending on the research activity and the rights applicable to the material, access may include consultation within the research environment, use within a defined research corpus, automated text and data analysis, collaborative research, or verification of research results.

Copyright-protected source materials made available within the controlled research environment may not be redistributed, communicated to the public or otherwise made publicly accessible unless a separate legal basis permits such use.

Retention of research materials

Research materials and copies created or processed for scientific research are retained only where and for as long as their retention remains justified by the research purpose. This may include the continuing analysis of literary translation and reception, the verification and reproducibility of research results, and related or follow-up research.

Retention of source materials within the research infrastructure is distinct from their publication. Materials may therefore remain available within the controlled research environment for legitimate scientific research purposes even where the underlying copyright-protected documents are not made publicly available.

AI processing and security

Where source materials are subjected to automated text and data analysis, appropriate technical and organisational measures are applied to their processing and access. External AI services used by iConTxt are accessed through institutionally controlled interfaces and configurations. API data sharing for model improvement is disabled.

Backups

Backups of the DLBT MySQL database and file structure are created daily. Backups are maintained for the purpose of ensuring the security, integrity, availability and recoverability of the research infrastructure and its data. They do not constitute an additional form of public access to the materials.
