What is a translator?
Just as the term 'translation' is difficult to define clearly and consistently across time and space, so too is the term 'translator'. Furthermore, translators were frequently not credited on title pages or elsewhere in a work. Consequently, titles were often recorded by libraries or when bibliographies were compiled without the name of the translator(s). Pseudonyms, abbreviations and deliberately false information were also commonplace throughout the history of translation. In our database, a translator is someone who can be identified in the work or title listing, or through academic research, and who has been credited for the translation.
